Aisle Width & Load Center Calculation: Why a 1.5-Ton Forklift Fails in a 25-Ton Yard

Most rental requests arrive as "I need a 3-ton forklift." While this suits standard pallets, it misses two common scenarios: a narrow retail warehouse needing a 1.5-ton electric unit, or an industrial yard lifting a coil with an extended load center requiring a 25-ton machine. This guide skips the daily checklist; it focuses on measurement before issuing the purchase order.

Three Measurements That Eliminate Guesswork

1. Net Aisle Width: Measure between racks or between the curb and container — not just the door width. The 1.5-ton class turns in roughly a 2.1 m aisle. The 12–25-ton class needs 4–5.5 m plus room to swing wide loads.
2. Load Center: The distance from the fork heel to the load's center of mass. Every extra 100 mm reduces rated capacity. A 9-ton steel coil may require a 16-ton forklift if it extends beyond the fork tips.
3. Shelf Height vs. Mast: A warehouse's nominal 4.8 m rack height doesn't mean a 20-ton machine will reach it — heavy-class masts are typically shorter.

• Indoor mall / pharmacy / epoxy floor: Electric 1.5–2.5 ton.
• Daily truck loading in an open yard: Diesel 2.5–5 ton.
• Non-standard pipes and oversized pallets: 6–7 ton.

Ordering a 10-ton "just in case," then discovering the doorway or floor scale can't accommodate the width. Better: send a photo of the aisle and the load weight for an accurate equipment match.
